26.3 A little rest from the heat

June 21, 2012

SINCE this past weekend we’re having AC problems and problems with phone tag with landlords, and landlord in the ICU of the hospital (please send good wishes/prayers his way), and generally misery in the main part of my house most of the time.

Until today.

And TODAY ONLY it appears looking at the projected temperatures of the upcoming weekend.

Finally the temp inside my house has broke below 85. Before this week I forgot how stressful, headache causing, nauseating, and draining just sitting in that sweltering heat can become. 83 now seems “cool” inside. Tolerable.

Which thanks to a single day cool front has lowered temps quite a bit for one afternoon.

So I’m enjoying today, and telling you that until the AC is fixed, I don’t have any energy/desire to post/podcast/ or do anything cooking / sewing / blogging related. Pretty much don’t want to do anything except give a weather report of the inside of my own house and sometimes have the energy to read back through other people’s tweets.

And drink water / tea. lots of drink.

And the one day I actually went away to a) sew, and b) get away from this mess of a house, was the one day that there was a possible connection & time for the person to come look at (and possibly fix) the AC. And I wasn’t home. Figures. Sux.

What makes it worse is that at work I am near several several machines that run at 100-300 degrees all the time and our lab re instituted that we all always have to wear lab coats even though the samples we deal with are all contained in vials with caps. Last summer I could periodically at least walk around without the lab coat for a while. Hot at home. Hot at work. No escape lately except for sleeping.

But today … cool …

Anyway.

Sunday morning I finished the last of my embroidered pieces on my periodic table quilt while I was out of town.

The group names of the periodic table for which I plan to applique a single hexagon to the side as a key to the groupings.

I will also have to cut up these names and rearrange them so that they can be appliqued to the front of the quilt top.

Here’s a slightly closer picture showing some of the variegation and the different color shades of threads I stitched together.

I tried to be random for which sides got which color grouping, and I tried to pair a light strand with a dark strand.

I already miss the easier portability of this embroidery, as I currently have the rest of the quilt top back in my purse, sewing down the one trim that I decided to use (well it’s probably getting paired with a 2nd trim outside of this).

Here’s the trim I chose. A round ric rac style of trim.

I am/was/am/maybe pairing this trim with another black trim that has spiraled gold pieces. If I do decide to put the 2nd trim on the quilt, it will lay over the top of the ric rac of the trim and be on the outside of the diagram. Double layer would be double work tho.

I DO NOT like the pins I have to use to keep the trim on while it’s in my purse. Because I fold this quilt up into a ball (or sometimes fold it) to move it around and then the pins poke back out at me.

Earlier I mitigated that problem with roxanne’s glue, but this time, I don’t want to use that glue to tack the trim down.

And I am appliqueing this trim down through the narrow gaps in the trim (provided already) and doing it all by hand so that the applique stitches aren’t really showing up at all! ;)

The only other piecing I’m doing right now is some paper piecing on my dancing ribbons quilt. This has 18 pieces for the circle, and today I realized I am one piece shy of having 9 done. But here’s a picture of 7 I took earlier today.

As you may see that the paper is still on the back and will be until these things are sewn together in a big ol circle.  So I’m not exactly half done (there are other parts to the outside as well) but I am pretty well close.

These blocks are mindless and it’s fun to think of the end result, even if all it is, folding, cutting, pinning, sewing clipping threads, ironing, repeat. And each ‘block’ has so many little pieces.

Two things of note here:

Now my dark purple is too dark but since I ripped out 2 blocks for the dark blue background, I am not ripping the blocks again, the dark purple will just have to stay dark.

And this picture shows a lot more ‘yellowing’ than what the colors actually are. Problem with not using a flash earlier and the ambient light etc.

These strips actually alternate with 9 other strips that haven’t been sewn yet.

Mind numbing. But this will be great when done. But I couldn’t paper piece 8 hours a day for several days straight w/o going a little nutzo.  (hmm, gretchen, familiar?)

Anyway, I don’t know when my AC will be back to normal and I can stop obsessing about the temperature in my house. I don’t know how long it will be until I have another perfectly perfect day to be able to sew or come talk to you again.

So if it’s a while, stay safe, drink lotsa water!

26.2 Sharing Jo’s Country Hexagon from Flickr (flickr friday)

Jo’s Country Hexagon

I was relistening to my podcasts about the angles in quilting.

This quilt fits all the categories. There are ‘triangles’ that are created in the middle of two rings, there are individual trapezoid fabrics that make up the rings, and the white fabric in the middle are hexagons.

This is fun scrappy, but could have some different pizazz if there was directed a little bit. Maybe I’ll put it on my ‘to do list’.

I have added several other flickr favorites, which you can find here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/scientificquilter/favorites/

Some of them are little marvin pictures who are put in all sorts of fun locations.

26.1 Guild Night!

June 12, 2012

Tonight is guild night! I get excited about guild night for several reasons.

1) I get to ‘stay up late for it’

which usually means that

2) I come back all excited

3) I zonk out the next day (takes a large amount of nasty, acid green, highly caffeinated beverage to keep me coherent the next day)

But other good reasons to go are

4) I get to see something new that someone (local) has done, get experienced in seeing lots of types of quilts usually, OR

5) I get to try a new technique with the guild, like make a scissors fob, a little carrier case, a microwavable bowl, littlefoot paper piecing …

6) I get to take pictures of and see other people’s quilts and then in the next month or two put those pictures on our website

7) I get to see what we’re working on for or group BOM’s (what others have done) and get to see my next month’s bom.

8) I get to see lots of embroidery (including twilling), and occasionally hand quilting going on during the meeting itself.

9) This means I can also hand piece, embroider or hand quilt my own stuff that I bring to the meetings.

10) I get to talk with a lot of my (not all) in person quilting friends.

You want to see what I’ve done for my BOM’s so far? There are only 2 months in, and tonight I’ll get a chance to think about the 3rd.

April’s Block

May’s block (a little personal blurring occured)

… that’s it. I’ve been waiting for a chance to use this pattern to embroider that I believe I got for free somewhere.  It’s SO CUTE and just fits the new block owner perfectly.

I hear there are other BOM’s that are also embroider, but they haven’t shown up yet, so I don’t know if they’ll be the same album block design or not.

So far they look traditional, and they are to a point, but we’ve got some applique coming, and a kalidescope type block, and some random HST’s coming too.

Tonight the rest of them are doing a christmas in July swap. For me I think this one I’m passing on.  Just Cuz.

26.0 SQ Ep 044 (42) – Life the Universe and Everything

June 10, 2012

Podcast feed

Wow, I had a post the other day called Happy Towel Day, and in that post I showed a lot of pictures to what I’m talking about with this episode.

Maybe I shoulda waited to post those?

Anyway.

Douglas Adams seems to be showing us his version of satire of the world today (in the 80′s lets not split hairs here), a la Heather Odover at CraftLit regarding how she’s viewing Gulliver’s Travels on her podcast.**

Adam’s best known works is the trilogy in 5 books of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. I LOVE the audiobook version of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy narrated by Stephen Fry found on audible! The rest of the books are narrated by Martin Freeman (Arthur Dent in the movie).

And the books are in order:

This series has caused its own fan base / cult following, and can be abbreviated as H2G2.

The recent H2G2 movie that was made had some good points and was slightly different from the books (as always).

So Hitchhiker’s Guide.

… Err… Ummm…

I made a background.

And the beginnings of a quilt.

But you’ve SEEN all this in my previous post about Towel Days!

What you haven’t seen is how this all works.

The Twist N Stitch Ruler makes twister blocks.

The Twist N Stitch ruler, if you can’t find it at your LQS can be found at Amazon.

And it comes with this little paper guide that shows how to make your “pre cut” quilt of squares and borders.

Each fabric transition is the center of a twister block.  June Taylor calls these pinwheels, but somehow I just can’t bring myself to say that.

There is a large section in the podcast where I discuss this technique of using the Twist N Stitch ruler.

And compare it to the Shape Cut ruler, also from June Taylor. Here’s a larger one than I have. This really large one would be really nice!

Also mentioned in the episode

Look at the variations of Jack’s Chain quilt at my new friend, Annika’s blog: http://stofgenoeg.wordpress.com/ She’s got German and English versions of her posts.

And lots of interesting designs too.

CaithnessCraftCollective a big ol Hello!

** No disrespect intended regarding Douglas Adam’s personal views on religion … just looked at wikipedia article & his views may not match up with your current views & beliefs.  Only mentioning because it’s in the beginning of the article.  Obviously I don’t really know the answer to “life the universe & everything.**

25.9 A little more progress on the back of this quilt

June 9, 2012

Here’s a progression of the BACK of my exothermic wonders quilt. Done in picture form (mainly)

It started with ‘these blocks’ I made at the retreat in feb.

And then I made some of ‘these blocks’. (A consideration for the alternate blocks I had made last winter).

And I put them together in the center.

And then I found some more pieces and cut them up for some first borders.

And then put away for a while. Got back out, made several more borders without pictures. Mainly out of pieces from this quilt top.

Above pieced borders were done but not attached until tuesday (of this week) morning.

Now I am out of the black fabric used in this quilt, so anything beyond has to be from the overbuying fabric for the top of this quilt.

One more set of borders (already cut a while ago), but not quite the right size for the back of the quilt yet.

At this point this would be a nice top in itself, but I am shy of being 4 inches larger on each side for the top of my exothermic quilt. So I’ll add more borders still.  I want these last borders to be larger and less pieced in case anything gets chopped off it’s just the borders that don’t have any personality.

And here’s a picture of the top that this quilt backing goes with.

Excited to be using pieces of my stash to get this thing made.

And no I don’t believe that all quilt backs HAVE to match the quilt tops, but THIS ONE does. ;)
